It is impossible to talk about Torrevieja without talking about its beaches with their fine sand and crystal clear waters, without doubt the most frequented along the Mediterranean coast along with the town of Benidorm (this is located approx 45 minutes away). They have all held the European Blue Flag for Clean Seas for several years, awarded for their quality and excellent installations. Of course the seaside promenades and the fishing port are attractions in their own right for visitors to this part of the Southern Mediterranean.
The Torrevieja micro-climate, brought about by the two salt lakes of La Mata and Torrevieja which occupy more than 55 per cent of the total area of the town, with its 340 days of sun and an average annual temperature of 20 degrees centigrade, has meant that thousands of tourists from the north of Spain and northern Europe have decided to set up home permanently in the town.
Below is a small description of some of the beaches around the Torrevieja area :-
Guardamar - A typical spanish town, with excellent bars offering Tapas, close to the beaches. Fine clean beach with clear blue waters and several children's play areas.
La Zenia - Close to Hotel La Zenia, volleyball nets and a very large beach area. Beach bars.
La Mata - Beach in Torrevieja town.
Campoamor (south of the town) - Smaller bay with volleyball net, football goals and two beach bars. Extremely clean, (all beaches are cleaned nightly). Marina nearby.
Cabo Roig (see below) - close to a marina, very clean, smaller beach, Good seafood restaurant close by.
A number of the beaches also offer facilities such as bars, restaurants, and volleyball nets The climate and the excellent beaches of course lend themselves to a variety of water sports like wind surfing, surfing, water skiing, etc. The International Sports Marina at Torrevieja also offers facilities for yachting and diving. Paragliding is also very popular in the area, and there are a couple of paragliding centres located to the north of Torrevieja at Santa Pola.
